About Wat Phra Kaeo (Kamphaeng Phet)
Wat Phra Kaeo was the main royal temple of ancient Kamphaeng Phet and lies in the centre of the walled city, inside the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, part of the UNESCO listing together with Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. Like Wat Phra Si Sanphet in Ayutthaya, it stood next to the palace. Weathered laterite Buddhas, seated and reclining, give the site a haunting look, and a large round Sri Lankan-style chedi has a base with niches that once held lion figures. Kamphaeng Phet sees few foreign visitors, so you may have the ruins to yourself.
