About Wat Si Chum (Sukhothai)
Wat Si Chum lies just outside the northern city wall of old Sukhothai and contains one of the most impressive sights in the historical park: Phra Achana, a huge seated Buddha in the 'calling the earth to witness' pose. The statue fills a tall square mondop whose roof has collapsed, so the Buddha now looks out through a narrow opening in the wall. The effect is striking, especially early in the morning. Locals still leave flowers and gold leaf on the hand. This area of the park has its own ticket and opening hours.
Highlights
- Phra Achana A giant Buddha seen through a narrow opening.
- Roofless mondop Tall walls without a roof frame the statue.
- Gold-leaf hand Worshippers press gold leaf on the fingers.
