Wat Khao Sukim is a large mountainside meditation temple in Tha Mai district, Chanthaburi, founded in 1972. A funicular railway carries visitors up the slope to a multi-storey hall packed with gifts donated by followers over the years: jade carvings, porcelain, crystal and lifelike wax figures of revered monks. From the upper terraces you look out over orchards and the green hills of eastern Thailand. The temple also runs meditation programmes. It makes a good half-day trip from Chanthaburi town, famous for its gem market and fruit orchards.
