About Wat Niwet Thammaprawat (Bang Pa-In)
Wat Niwet Thammaprawat is one of Thailand's most unusual temples: a Buddhist ordination hall built in Gothic Revival style, looking much like a European church with pointed windows, stained glass and a bell tower. It was founded in 1878 by King Chulalongkorn and stands on an island in the Chao Phraya River, opposite the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace. Visitors cross the river in a small cable car operated by monks. The temple combines easily with a visit to the palace gardens and pavilions on the way to Ayutthaya.
