About Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew
Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew in Khun Han district, Sisaket, is better known as the Temple of a Million Bottles. Monks began collecting empty beer bottles in 1984 and used more than 1.5 million green and brown bottles to decorate the halls, crematorium, water tower and even the monks' huts. Bottle caps form mosaics of the Buddha and flowers. The result is cheerful, sparkling in the sun and a clever example of recycling. It is far off the tourist trail in southern Isan, but a memorable detour for anyone exploring the Khmer temples of the region.
